How to Identify Vintage L.L.Bean
We’ve spent a lot of time focusing on tags as the primary way to date vintage pieces. This approach still holds true for L.L.Bean. The brand’s labeling, typography, and overall presentation have shifted over the years, and those changes can offer much insight to which era they belong to.

Identifying L.L.Bean: By the Tags
The 1920s to 1940s L.L.Bean tag
- Early 20s and 30s tags featured a golden font, with a golden border surround (top left tag)
- Later 30s and early 40s tags saw a slight variation, but not much visible change (bottom left tag)
- Later 40s tag features a red circular design, with the same golden surround color
- Freeport, Maine featured on all tags

The 1950s to 1960s L.L.Bean tag
- Introduced L.L.Bean script font on all tags
- Still included Freeport, Maine on all tags
- Green script tags had some variations, later versions introduced the indigo color tag

The 1970s to 1980s L.L.Bean tag
- L.L.Bean reverted to original logo for these tags
- Mostly white with 'light' green text, still included Freeport, Maine
- The two on the far right feature the text "boat and tote." This is what you can use to differentiate the 70s and 80s tags.

The 1990s L.L.Bean tag
- These tags are very similar to the 80s tags, displays a slightly darker green color
- One key difference is stating the region of the manufacturer (the USA), so if it states
- Loop tags are introduced as well

The 2000s L.L.Bean tag
- Started the tagline "quality guaranteed"
- Stated a lot more product information on them (size, material, region, etc...)
- Some introduced the tree logo

The 2010s to Modern L.L.Bean tag
- Early 2010s show subtle change to logo, but not noticeable at first glance
- Tags started to be printed on, no longer stitched separately
- The boring tag age starts unfortunately
